When I’m told that I can’t do something, it only inspires me more to work harder.

It was the summer of 1984...

At the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, Valerie Brisco-Hooks stepped into the capacity-filled Los Angeles Coliseum for the 400x4 meter final – the first of her historic three gold medals – and she couldn’t hear the 100,000 loud cheers.

It was silent to her and instead, she heard the pounding strides of years of preparation, the voice of her legendary coach Bobby Kersee saying drive deep, and her late mother’s voice of inspiration.  By the end of the 1984 Summer Olympics, Valerie achieved what no track athlete had ever done at the time - winning gold in the 400, 200, and 4x4 meter relay in a single Olympic game.

Brisco-Hooks combined 3 Gold medals in 1984, Silver in 88, setting 400 meter American record in 84. This remains one of the most impressive achievements in track and field history.  When Valerie decided to hang up her track shoes, she left an impact as one of the country’s most decorated female track and field athletes with:

  • 3 Olympic Gold medals - 1984
  • Set an American record in the 400 and 200 meter race
  • 1 Olympic Silver medal - 1988
  • World Championships Bronze medal - 1987
